Amateur

I'm getting more and more concerned about squeak. He's had the shits for what I think has been more than a month. Sometimes he seems to be doing better and other times I feel like we're just moseying along with placebos.

It started with just crapping by the dining table on the carpet. Yes my friends, the landlord has the whole place covered in think really dark pink carpet. I've become used to it. Anyway I thought it was just in protest of the dirty litter box so I cleaned it. Then I thought it was because I changed to a cheaper alternative so I went back to old faithful. Then I thought it was because he didn't know whe'd gone back to Arm N Hammer so I shut him in the bathroom with it for a couple hours. He came out and puked. That's when I decided to take him to the vet.

He hates going in the crate and groaned the whole way there. He hasn't been in a crate since I brought him here. I guess some people take their cats for a yearly visit. I didn't know. I even used a q-tip and ziplock to take a sample. He said it was an overgrowth of bacteria.

He game me some kind of antibiotic. I can't remember what it was called but I had to give him 1cc a day for a week. It never really worked. It seemed like he would get a little better after I gave it to him in the evening but by the next day we were back as square one. The steamer found a new home beside the table.

I gave the antibiotic a week after finishing to work and I wasn't seeing an end to it. I called the vet back and I really hate playing messenger with the animal nurses. They call you and relay the message to the big man and then call you back with a reply. Ugh. Anyway, another $26 prescription.

The first time I gave it to him, he hardly fought. I rewarded with a whole can of tuna. Thought we might be onto something and bought more tuna. The flora I had been putting in the dry food was causing a hunger strike. So he was eating. I bought more tuna. The next 3 pills have been a nightmare.

He has claimed the bathroom on the other side of the trailer (my bathroom) as his sanctuary. Gypsy has been asserting herself but misses him too. He stays in there. This morning I didn't have any help getting it in so I put a blanket over him and pried his mouth open. I got it in held his mouth shut. He scooted backwards out of the blanket, bolted, and there on the corner of the bedsheet was the fucking pill!

Fuck this, I broke it open and put it with the flora and the tuna. He ate around it. I think he'll get it eventually. We have a pretty good routine now though. If he hershey squirts in the tub so I can hose it away, he gets a can of tuna. His first dose was Friday. I thought by now we'd have some form. Not yet. I'm just now realizing that this is as boring as a bout with a kid's snotty nose. Such is life.

oh, god, dwayned. i have had the same problem with one of my kids. the vet first prescribed a pro-biotic cream to squirt down his mouth. that was fun. want to see my scars?

antibiotics didn't help. changing litter or litterbox location didn't help.

a shot of something I don't recall didn't help.

finally, special food helped.

i don't envy your quest for the answer to the problem.

i've never come so close to the idea of getting rid of a problem child.

Well, how long do you think it should take before I give up on the antibiotic. The "nurse" said to wait until I get close to the last of the bottle. That's 2 weeks.

I'm praying for a turd. FML

if you see results in two weeks, i would consider that worth every fight.

it took me around six months to get the problem under control.

that may be the reason I am now such a cunt.

oh, and originally the antibiotic was amoxicillin. after that didn't work, clavamox was tried. that seemed to help a bit. don't ask me why amoxicillin with a bit of clav helped.

This new one is erythromycin 25mg. My sister is suggesting pepto.

jockfullorobert said...

wow. how verynice of her. pepto can kill a cat.

Well I didn't take her advice but she said she gave it to her cat and it survived. Still not going to do it. Reminds me of when Dad wanted me to get him a couple bottles for his cow project. He's going to try breeding that leather bag of bones but that's another story.

oh, the leather bag breeding project sounds like something I need to hear.

on the cat front:

it seems to me that what finally stopped the diarrhea was a change in diet. started feeding him IAMS Sensitive Stomach.

Now, I can't vouch for that being the cure, but it sure didn't hurt.

and...

You're not supposed to give cats aspirin, either, as it can kill them. but...

I had a cat that was on death's door, and decided "what the hell?"

I gave it baby aspirin and it got well and lived. Coincidence? I think not.
